Super Formula is one of the most hotly contested single-seater categories in the world.
Since 1973, the championship has been travelling the continent of Asia, visiting world-class circuits such as Suzuka and Fiji Speedway. Before that, the category raced under various names such as Formula 3000 and Formula Nippon, before being renamed as Super Formula in 2013.
Some of history’s most decorated racing drivers have competed in the previous forms of Super Formula, including seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher. More recently, the likes of Pierre Gasly and Stoffel Vandoorne have graced its paddock, before also going on to race in F1.
The race car chassis consists of the Dallara SF19, with Toyota and Honda supplying a 2.0-litre turbo-charged inline-4 direct injection engines. From 2016 onwards, Yokohama Rubber became the competition’s sole official tyre supplier, marking its return to top-level formula racing after a hiatus of around 20 years.
Super Formula has been showcased in Asia and beyond thanks to its free-to-air television deals allowing races to be broadcast live. Now, all races are streamed in real-time in English for fans outside of Asia to enjoy, making the championship accessible to all.
